Season trends to try at home for Autumn/Winter interiors

So the clocks have gone back again and for me that signals the season to change indoors too. My Autumn /Winter interior demands some updates and switch-ups but that’s no negative, I love it.  Pastel and floral cushion covers can be swapped for tartans and tweeds and the vases which have held buds and flowers can make way for chunkier vessels to display the boughs and berries that look so amazing in this season. (Its also sloe gin and mulled wine season but that’s a whoooooole other blog post …)

Possibly tapping in to my descending from Celts, there is nothing I love more than a bright freezing day, real fire blazing, (faux) furs out and something robust in my tankard (sword-wielding is optional).  This, however gorgeous to me, is not your only option for an Autumn Winter update of course. Here are some looks for you to try at home if you’re ready to hunker down into the back end of the year.

All things tactile and huggable in a Hygge home..

Last week I was invited to the fabulous Graham & Green new store opening and re-location of their head office to the west country…I’ve taken most of my interior inspiration from the rather splendid offerings I saw at the launch party for this post but of course these trends will work with things you already have at home too.

Hygge {Hue-geh} This is the word of the moment. Inspired by a Danish way of living, it is a feeling or mood that comes from taking pleasure in the ordinary, making everyday things more meaningful; from a cosy, relaxed meal with friends, to the simplicity of lighting a candle for your home. Its being aware of the good of the moment whether it is simple or special. Whether alone, with loved ones or just around the home, Hygge is the art of creating intimacy. For my interior, this suggests warm, woollen blankets, soft cushions, luxury scented candles and beautiful flowers in a vase whilst the wind and rain howl outside…

Birds & Beasts  A great way of updating your interior for a new season is a furniture shift-round and the introduction of some new accessories. With a nod to the super-cool and quirky, the animal kingdom is where its at.

P-p-p-p-p-pick up a ….pernguin (or a flamingo or indeed a crow)

There are so many options when it comes to an animal theme and entirely up to you whether you take the bold or a more subtle approach to this trend. The beauty of this animal magic (anyone else old enough to remember the Johnny Morris reference?..No? Just me then…) a little goes a long way. Limit yourself or you’re tipping over from hipster to London Zoo Super-Fan.

Its a case of ‘why not?’ where this beauty is concerned…. look at that face!

From the Scandi-influenced stags that appeared a few years ago, via the flamingo and pugs, weird and wonderful animals are appearing everywhere in interiors for Autumn and Winter. This trend works really well in any area in the home and is a fun way of introducing personality. From bright, playful tones to more muted, woodland hues and even darker, gothic shades and species, they are guaranteed to make a statement.

Precious-Metals   To be perfectly honest this happens annually. From October onwards, everything gets the sparkle treatment, not just in interiors – sequin jumpers become perfectly acceptable day-wear ( I don’t know about you but I can’t look at one after Jan ’01).   Shimmery fabrics and shiny glazes, molten surfaces and metallics of every colour hit the catwalk and the home this season.

Starburst mirrors add impact and glamour on their own or in a group

Sophisticated and glamorous, a touch of rose gold, or copper or (my favourite) silver mercury glass will instantly elevate a room’s aesthetic. Whether you opt for a splash of shimmer or floor-to-ceiling shine, metallics will ensure your interior will shine with style .

Reflecting light is always a good idea in a room and never more so than during the darker afternoons and mornings. Looking at these tables and mirrors from Graham & Green, it’s little wonder why incorporating these metals into the home has become such a popular choice.

I had a great time at the launch event, met the staff from G&G and some uber-bloggers from insta-land, Dee Campling and Jade Wilce who both know a thing or twelve about styling a room.  We agreed it was a worthwhile evening to see products in ‘real life’ and not just on screen when it comes to interiors. I can confirm that in the backdrop of the old bakery (which they have renovated to become their new home), Graham & Green’s edit of new season’s pieces (along with some established faves) was really exciting no matter what your taste*.

My own abode is currently sporting the eclectic, what-I-like-to-call ‘deconstructed look’…before I can try any of these trends we need a ruddy good purge. At least now I have some incentive.

#Adventures in styling. If you like ’em, share ’em.

*not sponsored, paid or bribed to write this for G&G, though we did get gorgeous fizz and a goody bag….
