All you need for a home made Christmas wreath

Wreaths come in literally hundreds of styles, designs and materials these days. Fabric, feather, baubles and infinite possibilities after that (sprouts anyone?). My current favourite is the classic greenery wreath. I first tried these last year and having made a couple of huge ones for my son’s school door (they were not fussy, obvs) decided to have another try.

These are super easy to make and cost literally pence. You may already have EVERYTHING you need to make these at home. They are rustic, imperfect and personal. No finished edges here! That’s their charm too, as no two are alike and they reflect, for me some of the fun of Christmas.
When I say these are easy, I genuinely mean it. I am no super-crafter. I am a ham-fisted, fully paid-up amateur. These are going to take anywhere between 30 mins to an hour, excluding the time it takes to forage your greenery.

For these lovely home-made wreaths you will need:
Large bundle of long/stringy greenery – ivy strands are perfect plus fir, laurel leaves and eucalyptus
Craft wire – a few strands or a few pipe cleaners in brown, black or green or sisal/string
Pine cones, teasels or dried orange slices or whatever you fancy to decorate

I get a long strand of ivy to start (you can find this in the woods, parks or graveyards. I have far too much of it at the bottom of my garden). Start making a circle shape then hold it together at the top. With the overlapped end start wrapping it around, passing the end through the circle. Tuck the end into the circle to secure.

Repeat this with 4-5 more long strands of ivy. winding and binding round your circle, creating a nice hoop shape. Each time tuck the ends into the loop/circle to secure.

Once you have a nice circle you can secure it at intervals with some craft wire or pipe cleaners if like me, your craft wire has been ‘borrowed’ by your kids and not returned. You can also use some sisal string if that’s all you have. Anything that’s dark or blends in basically. At this point I wind around another string of ivy to cover any of the ties.

Now you have your secure hoop of ivy you can layer up some more greenery. Eucalyptus smells great, as does fronds of fir tree. I got these bits off the floor where the squirrels have chewed them off the tree!

Decide which is the ‘top’ of your wreath and decorate accordingly. I like them random, but you may want evenly spaced decorations. Next you can poke in small items in between the strands of the wreath – ivy berries look great, but you can put in anything; holly sprigs, rosemary bunches, rosehips, whatever you like or is readily available. secure these on with wire, string etc

That’s it! If you are still with me, you’ve made and decorated a rustic Christmas wreath from scratch. You can add a ribbon if you like and want it to look more polished. Told you it was easy!
