Supermarket and high street shopping usually means groceries and clothes..but for interior hounds like myself, its an extra opportunity to bag an up-to-date find for the home. Whilst Ikea, John Lewis, Heals and Habitat are stalwarts for updating the house and vintage finds bring immense feelings of satisfaction, I say ignore the supermarket home aisles at your peril !
I lLOVE the plethora of uber-cool interiors and lifestyle sites as much as anyone with an interest in decorating and styling their home, the selection is frankly mind-blowing these days. Likewise, a weekend visit to my local market where incredibly talented artisans and makers display their cool and quirky products is a great place to grab something unique and local (win win). However, I truly believe in variety in the home and my very favourite style or look is one which is not entirely slavish to a particular era or period or niche. Me, I love a mix up. Enter Supermarket chic. Yes, its a thing.
The home section at your superstore /supermarket may not just be for ironing board covers and replacement mop heads. I urge you to check it out. Styles and ranges update with the season and are every bit as ‘on-trend’ as some of our well known department stores. Cushions, frames, prints and decorative accessories feature alongside the more practical pieces. A new duvet cover with co-ordinating hand-knitted throw? Pop those bad boys in my trolley next to the Persil and peas please.
Last week (with a very large post-holiday cloud gathering over me), I was delighted to receive some samples from Sainsburys Home and literally opened a box of delights… Already tinkering with different looks in the hall (my Instagram post that morning had been on the need to do something with this painful area of my home) the timing could not have been better. Pretty blues and floral prints from the latest homeware collection ( in store and online) giving me all sorts of ideas for a hallway revamp.
I experimented with three different looks; a contemporary monochrome, a kind of bohemian souk-chic and, with some gorgeous pieces from the Sainsburys Home Bloomville range, a scandi-inspired feel.
I bought this table from Sainsburys supermarket last summer and its been such a versatile buy. Its been in the garden for evening cocktails with the girls, inside when we had friends round for tapas and now in the hall with all my favourite candles in warm tones. I love this copper shade with the blue shade on the walls (Juniper Ash, Little Green Paint Co) and although Mr Styleophile likes the roughened-look on the floorboards, I will be giving them another coat of paint for the colder months (Railings, Farrow & Ball).
Take a look at the pics and judge for yourself which is your favourite, but it will come as no surprise that I have kept that gorgeous supersoft throw out of the hall and on to my bed for lazy weekend lie-ins (my ideal Instagram setting) now that Autumn is here. I also am enjoying the scandi inspired prints that remind me of sunnier times, ideal for full-on hygge now that seasons are changing. The hall? Well that will just have to wait. I’m off to the supermarket ……
